Having traded for left-handed relief pitcher Gregory Soto earlier today, the Mets have at least temporarily called up fellow lefty reliever José Castillo. The team has optioned right-handed reliever Alex Carrillo to Triple-A Syracuse and moved right-handed reliever Max Kranick to the 60-day injured list to make room for Castillo on the 26- and 40-man rosters, respectively.
Whether or not Castillo sticks around beyond Soto’s arrival with the team in the near future is a fair question. Picked up from the Diamondbacks in mid-May, Castillo threw 11.1 innings with the Mets with a 2.38 ERA and a 3.27 FIP with fourteen strikeouts and six walks before the team designated him for assignment in late June. He cleared waivers and was sent to Syracuse, and in 5.1 innings since the demotion, he has a 1.69 ERA.
Carrillo, who can hit 100 miles per hour with his fastball, was signed out of independent ball by the Mets and has spent most of this season with Double-A Binghamton. The organization promoted him to Syracuse shortly before he got called up to the major league roster, but he struggled mightily in his first 4.2 innings with the Mets, putting up a 13.50 ERA and a 14.45 FIP. He’s given up at least one run in all three of his appearances, and his most recent one came on July 18 as he surrendered five earned runs while recording just four outs in a game that the Mets went on to lose.
Kranick is set to undergo Tommy John surgery, the latest injury—and one of the most significant—in a fairly long list of them in his professional career.
