deGrom won’t throw until the issue is resolved.
The Mets are placing Jacob deGrom, their ace and the best pitcher in baseball, on the injured list with tightness in his right forearm, as announced by manager Luis Rojas before the team’s series finale in Pittsburgh today. The move is retroactive to July 15, which means deGrom will be out for at least ten days from that time, but considering the plan is that he will not throw until the issue is resolved, that ten-day timeline could be irrelevant.
For the past week or so, the Mets had not officially announced deGrom as one of the team’s starting pitchers this weekend. And when he threw a side session on Friday, he was unable to complete it because of the forearm issue.
deGrom has dealt with a variety of issues this season, all of which involved something on his right side, whether it’s been the increasingly-popular “right side soreness” or something more specific involving his elbow or shoulder. This is his second stint on the injured list, as he spent some time on the IL back in early May, too. Unlike the other injuries, which deGrom said resulted from swings he took as a hitter, this one did not, according to him.
Combined with an incredibly bad loss last night in Pittsburgh, a frustrating loss on Friday night, and the fact that Francisco Lindor was placed on the injured list with an oblique injury this weekend, too, it’s been a trying start to the second half for the Mets.
