MLB: New York Mets at Cincinnati Reds
David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

Your Tuesday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

The Mets played a baseball game last night against the Cincinnati Reds. It is difficult to describe the sequence of events which occurred after that except to say that the Amazins both scored and gave up a lot of runs. After trading leads back and forth all night (including a blown save by Edwin Diaz in the ninth—his third straight—which sent the game into extra innings), the Mets finally broke through in the eleventh inning with five runs thanks to homers by Michael Conforto (his second of the game) and Kevin Pillar. All told, the Mets hit seven homers in last night’s affair, and the team somehow pulled away with a 15-11 win.

Luis Rojas mercifully did not have to worry himself with yesterday’s slugfest, as the Mets manager was suspended for two games as a result of his argument with the umpire in Sunday’s game.

The Mets made a few roster moves to add some much-needed fresh arms to the bullpen, with Stephen Nogosek and Anthony Banda (AKA last night’s winning pitcher) joining the squad.

Robert Stock is set to start in tonight’s game, so the bullpen will probably need to be prepared for another busy day at work.

In some much-needed good news for the Mets, Carlos Carrasco could be back with the major league team after one more rehab start, which will occur tonight in Syracuse.

In other news that is sure to excite plenty of fans, Sports Illustrated reported that the Mets may be interested in making a big acquisition at the trade deadline.

Kris Bryant would be one acquisition which the Mets will want to seriously consider pursuing.

The Mets have certainly faced their share of adversity in recent times—will they be able to overcome it all?

Former radio play-by-play announcer Josh Lewin is back with the Mets with a new daily podcast about the club.

Around the National League East

The Nationals scoffed at the Mets’ meager 15 runs by scoring 18 of their own, with two homers by Juan Soto and one by Jon Lester (?????) leading the barrage that resulted in a decisive victory over the Marlins.

The Marlins were forced to make some injury moves before last night’s game, placing Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Garrett Cooper on the injured list.

The Braves had their series opener against the Padres postponed due to rain, with a doubleheader now scheduled for Wednesday.

Prior to yesterday’s game that wasn’t, Atlanta called up Kyle Muller and Sean Newcomb from Triple A and placed Ender Inciarte on the COVID IL despite a negative test.

The Phillies, who were off last night, are trying to prove to their front office that they are legitimate competitors and should be buying at the trade deadline.

Around Major League Baseball

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic put together ten of the most intriguing questions facing different teams and players as we approach the trade deadline.

While many teams may be interested in selling off players who will be free agents after this season, there are some players who are under control beyond this year who may be available at the deadline.

CBS Sports offered ten possible trades that may occur by the time the deadline rolls by.

MLB.com looked at the top trade chip for each MLB team, with Ronny Mauricio being the pick for the Mets.

History will be made today as an all-women broadcast team will call the Orioles-Rays game on YouTube.

Yesterday at Amazin’ Avenue

I previewed the series with the Reds and predicted the Mets would only come away with one win.

Allison McCague evaluated the performance of all the position players who took the field for the Mets in the first half of the season.

Steve Sypa provided scouting reports for Mike Vasil and Levi David, the Mets’ eighth and ninth-round draft picks this year.
