Your Saturday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

The Mets retuned from the All-Star break in less-than-ideal form, losing 8-4 to the Cincinnati Reds. Sean Manaea started and pitched well, but as he is still working to increase his pitch count after returning from injury he was only able to get through four innings. He did leave the game with a 2-1 lead, but Alex Carrillo would go on to surrender five runs—including three homers—in 1.1 innings of work. Brandon Waddell soaked up the rest of the innings and surrendered two runs of his own, and while the bats made a slight comeback attempt in the ninth—forcing the Reds to bring in their closer and getting the tying run to the plate—Francisco Lindor popped up to end the threat and the game.

David Wright will finally have his number retired today after a memorable career of accomplishments and challenges.

Wright spoke with Steve Serby of the NY Post ahead of the celebration for him today.

The Athletic listed some of the best moments of Wright’s legendary career.

Brandon Nimmo—one of the few current Mets who had Wright as a teammate—spoke about the influence the Captain had on him.

A number of former Mets believe that injuries are the only thing keeping Wright out of Cooperstown.

After a lengthy rehab, Brooks Raley is finally back with the major league team.

Carlos Mendoza played the long game with his pitching staff last night, but in doing so he may have let a winnable game slip away.

While the bullpen did not cover itself in glory last night, Sean Manaea continued to look like the pitcher the Mets expect him to be.

Francisco Lindor was critical of himself after a rough game at the plate last night.

Max Kranick’s season is officially done—although whether he undergoes Tommy John or flexor tendon surgery remains unclear.

First-round draft pick Mitch Voit spoke about his memorable yet controversial celebratory moment in a college game earlier this year.

Longtime Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek passed away this week at the age of 68.

Around the National League East

Three homers from the Phillies’ batss—including two from Bryce Harper—were not enough to lead Philadelphia to victory, as they fell to the Angels 6-5 to start their second half.

Kyle Schwarber is a free agent after this season, but the Phillies are eager to keep him around.

Kyle Stowers continued his remarkable season for the Marlins with two more homers, including a two-run walk-off shot in extra innings to give Miami an exciting win against the Royals.

The Braves offense got off to a strong start and Spencer Strider tossed six scoreless innings en route to a 7-3 victory over the Yankees.

One of the most impressive moments in the Braves game was an utterly jaw-dropping throw from Ronald Acuña Jr.

The Nationals entered the ninth inning tied against the Padres, but promptly proceeded to give up five runs and lose 7-2.

Around Major League Baseball

Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte has been placed on the reserved list following his home being burglarized during the All-Star break.

The Brewers will be without one key piece in the beginning of the second half, as Sal Frelick has been placed on the injured list due to a hamstring strain.

Orioles starter Grayson Rodriguez still has not pitched in a major league game in 2025 due to injury, and now his rehab has been shut down indefinitely due to lingering elbow discomfort.

Luis Ortiz—who is on leave as the league investigates him due to suspicious betting activity on pitches he threw—will remain on the sidelines through August 31st.

MLB.com listed a number of teams that will have critical stretches over the next two weeks to determine whether they are buyers or sellers at the deadline.

Former Met Rico Garcia has been designated for assignment by the Yankees after a rough outing in yesterday’s game.
