Meet the Mets
The Mets were swept in yesterday’s doubleheader with the Orioles, dropping the first game 3-1 and losing the second 7-3. In the first game, they wasted an excellent start from David Peterson, who went seven-plus innings and allowed just one run on five hits with no walks. He was lifted after a leadoff single in the eighth and was relieved by Ryne Stanek, who walked four, surrendered a go-ahead two-run homer to Gunnar Henderson, walked four, and surrendered a sac fly. The Mets went quietly in the top of the ninth. The Mets went 1-for-11 and left eight on base, which really cost them the game.
In the second game, the Mets again found themselves with runners on second and third and nobody out in the first, and this time drove in that illusive run on a Juan Soto ground out and another on a Pete Alonso sac fly. Unfortunately, not much went well after that, as the offense once again faltered with just five hits while the bullpen didn’t fare much better. The Mets went 1-for-8 with RISP in the defeat. Rico Garcia was the only Mets’ reliever who escaped this one unscathed, going 2 2⁄3 hitless innings, but Baltimore’s bullpen did not allow a run over three innings.
