Mets Morning News for August 2, 2025

August 2, 2025 by Amazin Avenue

MLB: San Francisco Giants at New York Mets

Your Saturday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

The post-deadline Mets opened up a new series at home against the Giants last night after being swept by the Padres in California. Unfortunately, the bad times continued for the Amazins, as they fell to San Francisco 4-3 in ten innings. They fell behind early on, as David Peterson gave up two runs in in the second inning (though those would prove to be the only ones he’d surrender in six innings of work), and Ryne Stanek also got tagged for one run in the seventh to make it 3-0 Giants. While the Mets bats were largely helpless for most of the night, they did manage to get a run in the seventh (off a solo homer from Pete Alonso) and two more in the eighth to tie it. But Edwin Díaz surrendered a pinch-hit single to old friend Dominic Smith to score the ghost runner in the tenth, and the Mets—despite loading the bases—could not bring a run home in the bottom of the frame.

Prior to the game, the Mets put their new trade deadline acquisitions on the active roster while demoting Luisangel Acuña to Syracuse.

All three of the newest Mets expressed excitement to be with their new team for the pennant race.

Ryan Helsley made his Mets debut last night and got to introduce the Citi Field crowd to his excellent entrance music.

Tyler Rogers’s first appearance as a Met will likely come against his former team.

The Mets are particularly excited by what their bullpen will look like for the final two months of the season.

While Tyrone Taylor’s playing time will inevitably decline thanks to the acquisition of Cedric Mullins, Carlos Mendoza suggested that he will still find his way on the field at times.

The Mets managed to pull off their deadline deals without sacrificing any of the top talent in the farm system.

Despite several rumors, Mark Vientos happily remains a member of the Mets.

Around the National League East

The Phillies were held scoreless through the first six innings, but then scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to beat the Tigers and reclaim first place in the National League East.

The Marlins had a remarkable victory against the Yankees and their new bullpen arms, erasing two separate deficits and ultimately winning on a walk-off single from Agustin Ramírez.

Sandy Alcántara is happy to remain in Miami following months of trade rumors.

The Braves were down 3-0 entering the ninth, scored two runs and had the tying run on-base, but fell just short to the Reds.

The Nationals fell to the 16-9, but the team nevertheless has expressed excitement at getting to see some of their young players more following the deadline.

Around Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball announced that the 2027 All-Star game will be played in Wrigley Field for the first time since 1990.

The Rockies had themselves quite a game, falling behind 9-0 to the Pirates in the first inning yet ultimately winning 17-16 on a walk-off two-run homer from Brenton Doyle.

The Brewers have placed star outfielder Jackson Chourio on the injured list due to a right hamstring strain.

Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado is also hitting the injured list with a right shoulder strain.

The Dodgers are down another reliever with Kirby Yates being placed on the injured list with lower back pain. Surely that is the last bit of injury news, right?

Nope, one more. Rays first baseman Jonathan Aranda is also going on the injured list as a result of a left wrist fracture.

The Yankees released Marcus Stroman in the midst of a very disappointing 2025 campaign for the former Met.

FanGraphs offered their take on the winners and losers of the deadline.

Yesterday at Amazin’ Avenue

Chris McShane previewed the weekend series against the Giants.

Thomas Henderson examined the prospects who went to the Orioles in exchange for Cedric Mullins.

Joe Sokolowski provided a trade deadline edition of This Week in Mets quotes.

Brian Salvatore evaluated the state of the Mets’ bullpen following the trade deadline acquisitions.

Brian and Chris discussed the wheeling and dealing the Mets did this week on this latest episode of Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World Series.

This Date in Mets History

The Mets completed a crucial three-game swept of the Washington Nationals that foretold their eventual claiming of the division race on this date in 2015.
