Your Thursday morning dose of New York Mets and MLB news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

Yesterday was a dark, dark day for the 2025 New York Mets: they suffered their first two-game losing streak in a row by dropping the rubber game against the Minnesota Twins. After Griffin Canning was scratched from the start due to illness, Justin Hagenman made his major league debut following an opener, and he pitched fairly well. He ended up being at risk for his first major league loss when a run charged to him scored after he was relieved for José Buttó, who also ended up surrendering two of his own runs in two innings of work. Down 3-0, the Mets did make a valiant comeback by scoring three runs in the top of the eighth and ultimately sending the game to extra innings. Alas, the offense failed to score the ghost runner in the top of the tenth, and Ty France led off the bottom of the frame with a walk-off single to send the Mets back home to Citi Field with their first losing streak of the season.

The Mets might not have been able to eke out the win, but they nevertheless could not have asked for much more from Hagenman.

A scary moment occurred in yesterday’s game when a line drive off the bat of Tyrone Taylor struck first base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt in the head.

As Hagenman made his long-anticipated major league debut yesterday, the scout who signed him got to take a victory lap while continuing to recover from a recent stroke.

As Jeff McNeil continues to make his way back from injury, he will now be getting some reps in center field.

Francisco Lindor may not yet be the official captain of the Mets, but he will serve as captain for Team Puerto Rico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Around the National League East

Aaron Nola’s rough start to the 2025 season continued, as he surrendered seven runs (six earned) against the Giants en route to an 11-4 loss for the Phillies.

Spencer Strider made his return from the injured list and pitched well on the whole, but the Braves’ bats struck out a whopping 19 times and fell to the Blue Jays 3-1.

Benches cleared when old friend Jorge López threw a high and in pitch to Andrew McCutchen right after hitting another Pirates batter in the Nationals’ 6-1 loss to Pittsburgh.

Paul DeJong was placed on the injured list by Washington following a scary HBP to the face in Tuesday’s game against the Pirates.

Matt Mervis hit yet another home run (this time on his birthday), but it wasn’t enough for the Marlins, who fell to the Diamondbacks 6-2.

After designating Jonah Bride for assignment, Miami has dealt the infielder to the Twins in exchange for cash considerations.

Around Major League Baseball

Paul Skenes offered a glimpse into his mindset as he seeks to settle in as one of the game’s brightest stars.

A group of MLB executives explored the question of whether Kyle Tucker could potentially sign an in-season extension with the Cubs.

Catching prospect Edgar Quero will be making his major league debut soon after being called up by the White Sox.

Former Marlins GM Kim Ng has been named the new commissioner of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League.

A 105-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor got to throw out the first pitch at the Brewers game yesterday.

Yesterday at Amazin’ Avenue

Lukas Vlahos offered a final assessment of the offseason moves made by the Mets.
