The bullpen carousel continues.
Ahead of this afternoon’s game with the Diamondbacks, the Mets swapped four players with Triple-A Syracuse: pitchers Chris Devenski and Brandon Waddell were optioned to Triple-A, while lefty Génesis Cabrera and right-hander Ty Adcock were added to the MLB roster.
The Mets’ are in the midst of their second 13-game stretch without a day off in the last month, and their pitching staff is overworked. Specifically, the bullpen, an early season success, has led to three tough losses in the last week, and injuries to the two lefties in the early-season ‘pen – A.J. Minter and Danny Young – haven’t helped things. To combat this, the Mets have seen a number of players come up and down as part of the bullpen over the past week: José Ureña, Kevin Herget, Devenski, and Waddell.
In his pre-game press conference, manager Carlos Mendoza mentioned that Waddell will be kept stretched out as a starter and, most likely, will get another start at some point down the line, though will not be eligible to make the Mets’ next needed spot start unless he is replacing an injured player on the roster. Mendoza also mentioned Dedniel Núñez, saying “I’m pretty sure we will see him shortly.”
Cabrera, the now sole lefty out of the Mets’ bullpen, made his Major League debut in 2019 with the Cardinals, and pitched for St. Louis and Toronto before signing with the Mets in the offseason. He’s the owner of a career 3.89 ERA with 275 and two-thirds big league innings.
Adcock appeared in three games for the Mets in 2024 with somewhat dreadful results, giving up four home runs and three walks in four and a third innings pitched.
