Manaea will make his season debut this afternoon in Kansas City.
The Mets have reinstated Sean Manaea from the 60-day injured list ahead of this afternoon’s game against the Royals in Kansas City. Manaea will make his season debut this afternoon piggybacking Clay Holmes in relief as the Mets close out the first half. Manaea has missed the entire first half of the season rehabbing a right oblique strain he suffered in spring training. He suffered a setback late in his rehab when a loose body in his elbow was causing him discomfort, which he will attempt to pitch through.
After pitching to a 3.47 ERA in 181 2⁄3 regular season innings and starting four games in the postseason for the Mets, the 33-year-old lefty inked a three-year, $75 million deal to return to New York. He is a greatly anticipated addition to a hobbled pitching staff that has been plagued with injuries in recent weeks and his return comes just two days after Kodai Senga pitched four scoreless innings in his first start since straining his hamstring a month ago.
“It feels good,” Manaea said. “It sucks to be on the IL, you want to be out there helping this team win and it’s frustrating when you can’t do that — everyone has been doing an incredible job, so it feels good to be back.”
To make room for Manaea on the active roster, the Mets optioned righty Austin Warren to Triple-A Syracuse. Warren holds a 1.69 ERA in four appearances for the Mets this season with four strikeouts and three walks.
