Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Edwin Díaz have played in the All-Star Game before.
What’s rarer for the Mets than making the playoffs? Having four All-Stars in a single season. The 2025 All-Star Game in Atlanta on Tuesday will be just the tenth time in franchise history that four players represent the Amazins.
While David Peterson was selected for the first time in his career, Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Edwin Diaz are all returning for at least their third trip. So with the break right around the corner, let’s take a look back at how these Mets have performed in their previous All-Star appearances.
Francisco Lindor (5x All-Star: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2025)
Lindor, making his fifth All-Star appearance, has yet to make his mark on the midsummer classic. In seven plate appearances, Lindor is 0-for-7 with three strikeouts.
Lindor had his biggest opportunity in 2016 at San Diego, batting with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh against Pirates closer Mark Melancon. He attacked the first pitch, Melancon’s trademark cutter, and grounded it to former Met Daniel Murphy. Lindor’s best swing was in 2018 at Washington, when he sent a 1-1 sinker from Brewers reliever Jeremy Jeffress just shy of the warning track in left-center field.
In the six years since Lindor last received All-Star honors, he’s gotten traded to New York, signed a $341 million deal, and started a family not to mention scoring back-to-back silver slugger awards and an MVP runner-up finish. However he fares in Atlanta, it will certainly be a full-circle moment for a matured Lindor to return to the All-Star Game as the face of the Mets franchise and the starting shortstop for the first time in his career.
Pete Alonso (5x All-Star; 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025)
Alonso’s All-Star resume began with a bang, and I’m not just talking about the Home Run Derby victories. The day after Alonso announced his arrival on the national stage with a dominant display in the 2019 derby as a rookie, he came through with the biggest hit of the All-Star Game. With the bases loaded and two outs, the polar bear pulled an up-and-away fastball off Indians closer Brad Hand, sneaking it past shifted second baseman Gleyber Torres into left-center field and driving in two runs.
In 2022, Alonso worked a seven-pitch walk against Yankees starter Nestor Cortes Jr. But since then, his fortunes have flipped. In 2023 and 2024, Alonso went a combined 0-for-3 with three strikeouts.
Unfortunately, Truist Park is not the place to be if Alonso wants to avoid being punched out. In 46 career games played at the ballpark, Alonso has struck out 51 times — his second-highest AB-SO ratio at any National League stadium.
Edwin Díaz (3x All-Star; 2018, 2022, 2025)
Despite being a two-time All-Star selection, Díaz has played in just one All-Star Game back in 2018 with the Mariners.
In the midst of a 57-save season with Seattle (which still marks a career-high despite his phenomenal years with the Mets), Díaz did not fare well attempting to close out the game against the N.L. All-Stars. After striking out Rockies shortstop Trevor Story to bring the A.L. two outs away from victory, Díaz walked Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto and surrendered a two-run homer to Reds second baseman (and soon-to-be-named All-Star Game MVP) Scooter Gennett.
Díaz didn’t get action during his 2022 Mets magnum opus, so we’re yet to see him take the All-Star Game mound to the tune of his now-iconic intro. It wouldn’t be the first time Narco’s horns rang through Truist Park, as Braves former catcher William Contreras used the song as his walk-up music in 2022.
