Woof.
The Mets had a lead and were getting a good start out of Clay Holmes, and then the wheels fell off. When the smoke settled, the Mets lost their fourth straight game 7-2 to the Brewers.
The Brewers got off to an early lead when Sal Frelick led off the game with a solo home run. After that, Holmes settled down and, while he was walking more batters than anyone would’ve liked (including loading the bases in the fifth), he was getting out of jams and keeping the score close.
The Mets would tie the game in the third when Jeff McNeil got hit by pitch from Brewers’ starter Frankie Peralta. Luis Torrens then singled to move McNeil to third and Brett Baty drove him in with a sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Juan Soto walked, stole second, and scored on a Pete Alonso single, putting the Mets up 2-1.
Holmes left the game with one out and one on in the top of the sixth and was relieved by Reed Garrett. Garrett instantly gave up a game-tying double to Brice Turang. A single and a walk loaded the bases, still with just one out, and Joey Ortiz drilled a long ball to left for a grand slam, putting the Brewers up 6-2.
Brandon Waddell would close the game out with three innings of relief work, adding another run on the Bre2wers’ tally, but saving the bullpen for game 2. Surely, that can’t also be terrible, can it?
Jacob Misiorowski will face the Mets’ bullpen, with Blade Tidwell getting the bulk duty in the nightcap.
