Too much fun.
The Mets should probably consider forfeiting the remainder of their games in Atlanta. For the third time in as many nights, the team lost to the Braves, and they extended their losing streak to six games in the process. The final score was 7-1 in Atlanta’s favor.
Clay Holmes threw 104 pitches and lasted just four-and-two-thirds innings. He somehow managed to give up just three runs despite issuing six walks and giving up four hits. Huascar Brazobán, who has done some great work out of the Mets’ bullpen early this season, issued three walks of his own, gave up two hits, and allowed four runs to score while recording only two outs.
And Justin Hagenman, the Mets’ scheduled starting or bulk pitcher for Friday night in Philadelphia, wound up eating the rest of the innings in this lifeless loss. Maybe the silver lining here is that the Mets will call up a prospect like Nolan McLean to pitch the series opener in Philadelphia instead.
The Mets’ lineup was awful, to boot. As a group, they struck out thirteen times, drew one walk, and had six hits. Their lone run scored on a Ronny Mauricio single in the second inning.
This could very well be the low point of the Mets’ season, and the fact that they’re still tied for first place in the National League East right now in spite of their horrendous week of baseball is at least a little encouraging. But there are problems that need to be addressed, and the organization seems short on solutions.
