How is the Mets’ position versus how it was a week ago?
On Thursdays for the rest of the season, we will be doing a Wild Card update, looking at how the Mets and their competitors have fared since last check in.
The Mets have gone 4-2 over their last six games, and have gone from being a half-game out of the Wild Card race to holding a one game lead over the Braves for the third spot. They did this by winning series against the Reds and the Blue Jays, and by the other teams in the race not playing nearly as well as the Mets have. With two series against the Phillies in the next ten days, the Mets need the other teams to keep struggling, even if the Mets can see good results against those hoagie-eating bastards. Let’s see how the other teams have played this week.
Arizona Diamondbacks – First position, +2.0 games
The Diamondbacks went 3-3 in the last week, losing three in a row to the Giant and Astros, and then peeling off three in a row against the Astros and Rangers. With two series against the Brewers starting tomorrow, with a trip to Colorado sandwiched in between, Arizona will look to gain some ground in the Wild Card standing, though Milwaukee is not a pushover team.
San Diego Padres – Second position, +1.5 games
The Padres went 2-4 this week, losing two of three to the Giants, dropping the finale with the Tigers, and splitting a two game series with the Mariners. Of all the teams in the heat right now, the Padres seem to be faltering the most, which is surprising based on the return of Fernando Tatis, Jr to their lineup. This weekend, the Padres see the Giants again and, hopefully, continue to struggle against their rivals from up north.
Atlanta Braves – 1.0 games out of position
The Braves went 3-4 over the past week, dropping one game each to the Rockies, Blue Jays, Reds, and Nationals in one of the weirdest scheduling weeks in recent memory. They face the Dodgers this weekend and, hopefully, get trounced by Ohtani and co.
